Pin On Your Homecoming Spirit!

Do you remember those late fall days, back at school, football games, dances, reconnecting after THREE whole MONTHS off?  Then there was the pinnacle of football season… Homecoming!  The special activities all week long, the parade, the FLOATS!  My favorite float (actually the only one I remember!) was the band float the year they made a gigantic black shoe wearing a white marching band spat (that was that white thing they wore over their black shoes for those who don’t know what spats are.)  Why is that memorable you ask?  Because the shoe was hydraulic and it was “stomping” on the “head” of whoever was our opponent that year!  I don’t recall who we played, or for that matter, which year it was, but I remember that GIANT, animated, stomping shoe.

The float was (obviously… or not) the band’s float entry.  And again I may not recall correctly (hopefully some “band-head” will read this and respond) but I DON’T think it won in the float competition, for as we know the “senior class” float was always the winner, rightfully so or not… usually not.  Anyway, that anima-tronic shoe should have won!  Does anyone have a picture of that float???

Anywho, back to homecoming in general….  Another feature of the week-long activities was the sale of “Homecoming buttons”.  It was a way to show your school spirit and was a means of raising funds for… ???  WHERE did that money go?  President Williams can you shed some light on this topic?  Your “administration didn’t abscond with the funds did they?  Pizza party at Happy Joe’s for your inner sanctum maybe?  I smell a scandal brewing here!  Statute of limitations you say?!  Balderdash, say I!  Not in the court of public opinion!  Oh, wait, sorry… got carried away there for a sec, but I am back.  Seriously, what was that money raised for?  The homecoming dance?  Prom?  Various student activities funded by student council?  Someone help!

Sorry, lost in another tangent… back to the buttons themselves.  Each year a new button with a year specific theme was designed and sold.  Some people wore them all week, some even saved them beyond that week, and even fewer yet kept them throughout high school.  But at least ONE person still has them to this VERY DAY!  Which brings us around to the gallery below, with no further ado I give you CHS Homecoming Buttons circa 1974 – 1979 (no 1980… remember by then we had all grad-jee-ated!)

Can you name ALL the opposing teams???
