Do They Even Know What “Self-scheduling” is Today?

Recollections from Tom Dunmore

This week marks the first day of school in many school districts.  And that brings back memories of OUR last-first day of public school life.  Tom Dunmore sent in a scan… (continue reading)

of his class schedule(okay, 1st day, second semester, whatever!) he discovered from an “archeaological dig” (cleaning out his Mom’s house.)  Do students even get a PAPER schedule of their classes anymore… I highly doubt it!  Not to mention actually going thru the self-scheduling process.  (click here for another “flashback” to re-live a memory of that dreaded activity)

Tom points out, ” …the C and D for gym class represent 3rd and 4th quarter.  Everyone wanted to take Rec Games because all you did was play ping pong and stuff like that.  Back then you still had to take a shower after gym!  Also, since 1900 students wouldn’t fit in the cafeteria, there were 4 separate lunch periods (emphasis added).  If you had A lunch, you went before the start of 5th hour, B and C went during 5th, and D (which I had) you went after 5th period.”

Oh, the dreaded “late lunch”, that was the worst!  Now for those detail oriented people you’re thinking, “HEY!  There were only three lunches weren’t there?!?”  Nay I say!  When they “ruined” OUR school by bringing in the Freshman in fall of `78, the school population swelled (as Tom notes) to approximately 1900 warm, sweaty, smelly teenaged bodies (YUCK!)  At that point they had to introduce a fourth lunch period to accomodate everyone.  (– Now, that truly is a “Flashback”!)  Enough about lunch, I’m getting hungry (it’s 11:30 AM as I write this.)

Thanks for sharing this Tom!  Remember, if you find ANYTHING connected to our old school days, please don’t discard it, at least not BEFORE scanning it or taking a picture of it to share.  Write a quick note of anything you can remember about it and send it on in (email to Postmaster@CHSClassOf1980.com) for consolidation into the…

And CONGRATULATIONS to any of you that waded all the way through this rememberance to the end —  HUZZAH to YOU! 😊

Do you have a memory from those hazy-lazy school days?
